CHS South Recognised for Excellence in Reading
9th Dec 2025

CHS South is proud to have submitted extensive evidence towards the One Education Secondary Reading Award, reflecting the significant work across the school to strengthen reading and literacy. Led by Assistant Headteacher Corinna Iredale, our literacy team has developed robust systems to monitor progress and provide targeted support, ensuring impactful provision for all students.

A strong culture of reading for pleasure is now embedded at CHS South, with opportunities to read widely and confidently across subjects. This milestone highlights the dedication of our staff and students and reinforces our ongoing commitment to raising literacy standards and fostering a lifelong love of reading.

Awarded GOLD - A Celebration of Excellence

Following a detailed review of our submission, One Education commended CHS South for the scale, quality and impact of its reading provision. The review highlighted:

A strong intervention programme, tailored to individual student needs, demonstrating clear improvements in targeted reading outcomes.

A whole school reading approach, with vocabulary development and disciplinary literacy embedded across subjects.

A well-established culture of reading for enjoyment, offering diverse, inclusive reading opportunities that allow students to explore literature that resonates with them personally.

In their feedback, One Education wrote:

"I have thoroughly enjoyed reviewing your evidence and was amazed by how much you do to ensure pupils are accessing high quality reading experiences…Your bespoke approach to supporting all individuals is so impressive and showcases your dedication to improving reading outcomes for every child."

"Your reading for enjoyment curriculum is embedded and showcases a wide range of opportunities for pupils who can read according to their own preferences, with attention to diversity across the books you offer. This is extremely valuable."

Laura Buczko, Literacy Team Leader at One Education, congratulated the school:

"Your award reflects the commitment and knowledge shown in building a successful reading curriculum. We hope your journey of creating a reading culture continues to grow, develop and inspire your students to keep reading for the whole of their lives."

Headteacher, Mr Prophet, praised the achievement:

“This award is a proud moment for CHS South. It recognises the incredible commitment of our staff and students to reading and literacy. Every student deserves the opportunity to fall in love with reading, and this award reflects how deeply embedded that belief is in our school.”

Miss. Iredale, Assistant Headteacher, reflected on the journey:

“We set out to build a reading culture that empowers every young person, not only to read well, but to want to read. This award is testament to the hard work of our staff, the enthusiasm of our students, and our shared belief in the power of reading.”

CHS South looks forward to continuing its literacy journey and further expanding the opportunities available to our students. The Gold Award is both a celebration of what has been achieved, and a foundation for the next chapter, inspiring confident, capable and passionate readers for life
