Science

Science at CHS South sparks curiosity, builds knowledge, and empowers students to explore the world around them. Through hands-on experiments, critical enquiry, and debate about real-world issues, our students grow into inquisitive thinkers who can question, test, and explain the natural world with confidence.

Our Intent

Our mission is to develop scientists who are curious, resilient, and able to think critically about the world.

We aim to:

  • Expand pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

  • Nurture scientific enquiry skills through hands-on investigation and analysis.

  • Foster respect for living organisms and the environment.

  • Build cultural capital through trips, experiences, and enrichment opportunities.

  • Encourage pupils to apply scientific knowledge to real-world problems and debates.

  • Prepare students for success at GCSE, further study, and future STEM careers.

Why Study Science?

Studying Science develops skills that extend beyond the classroom:

Problem-Solving – applying knowledge to real-world challenges.

Critical Thinking – questioning evidence, analysing data, and drawing conclusions.

Practical Skills – developing confidence in experiments, investigations, and scientific methods.

Curiosity – exploring how and why things work in the natural world.

Cultural & Ethical Awareness – understanding how science impacts society, technology, and the environment.

Transferable Skills – teamwork, communication, numeracy, and resilience valued by universities and employers.

Enrichment Opportunities

Our students extend their curiosity and scientific understanding beyond the classroom through:

  • Science clubs and STEM competitions.

  • Trips to places of scientific interest (museums, science centres, universities).

  • Guest speakers and visiting scientists.

How Parents/Carers Can Support at Home

  • Encourage curiosity – ask questions and explore scientific “why” and “how.”

  • Watch documentaries or science YouTube channels together.

  • Support revision with BBC Bitesize Science or GCSE revision guides.

  • Relate science to everyday life – cooking, health, energy, the environment.

  • Log onto the home study site on SharePoint to access the wide breadth of science resources, which support both knowledge acquisition and retention.

  • Encourage participation in science clubs, fairs, and enrichment activities.

Further Study

  • A Level Biology, Chemistry, Physics.

  • A Level Psychology, Applied Science, or Environmental Science.

  • University degrees in Medicine, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Biochemistry, Forensics, Computer Science, and more.
